Michal Ožibko
Michal Ožibko (*1981) created his first oil painting at the age of 14. While attending a secondary technical school, he discovered graffiti, which later influenced the large-scale canvases he produced during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. This "street experience" also radicalized Ožibko's perspective on what can become the subject of his paintings. Michal's realistic painterly approach tends toward hyperrealistic visuality, yet he also ventures into a purely non-figurative style that, by contrast, possesses a strongly expressive character. He explains this by stating that it is impossible to strictly adhere to a single artistic style without risking a lapse into mannerism and cliché, viewing this "dualism" as a form of self-defense. On the art scene, he made perhaps his most significant mark with the diptych "iDeath," which won the visitor's choice award at the BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2010. Thematically, Michal Ožibko's work focuses on depicting compositions of everyday objects, often existential in nature, or historically rooted themes that he redefines, shifting their contexts. He is typically known for working in smaller, closed cycles.
