Jakub Švéda

Jakub Švéda (*1973), a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and the atelier of Jiří David, Švéda combines geometric elements and symbols in reference to contemporary technocratic society, with contrasting expressively conceived parts with randomly flowing colors and energetic splatters. This combination of strict geometry, fonts and expression creates tension between opposite poles blending on the canvas. Švédovy's mysterious texts, in conjunction with technological and industrial signs, melt into geysers of color that absorb their exact message. The paintings often give a disturbing impression, as if they are warning us about something. Texts such as Acid, BioTech or Exist create a semblance of threat and machine-like rigidity. Although painting is the domain of Jakub Švéda, some of his works move smoothly along the border between sculptural relief and object - here again, he uses the symbols of technological and consumer society - cans, microchips, electric circuits and plastic objects of unidentifiable purpose. His work purposely creates a feeling in the viewer of a kind of elegant unrest, which points to the environment of today's over-technical world. In addition to painting, Jakub Švéda also deals with light objects, glass sculpture, and realizations in design, architecture and public space. He has participated in several presentations of many generations of contemporary art in the Czech Republic and abroad. He is the author of the prestigious Czech Lion Film Award statue.
