Tadeáš Kotrba

Tadeáš Kotrba (*1986, Valašské Meziříčí) paints figurative landscape paintings with the motif of a journey, barriers or discovering new spaces. It is based on experienced situations, real landscapes, and the scenes painted on the paintings can even resemble photographic snapshots in contours.

His thoughtful sequence of images within images, his intelligent way of treating the image-object as a narrative form, the simultaneous blending of painterly and graphic expression, the overlapping layers of past and future, civil and otherworldly, capture our attention with synthetic intensity. We perceive the personal level, we recognize a readable story, but we immediately enter an abstract landscape, an image-making space. In recent years, he has incorporated into his typical photographic scenery figurative drawings, reminiscent of demons or angels, robust visages inspired by the work of the last period of the life of father Mário Kotrba. At a given moment, the picture acquires two positions, namely the realistic plane of the author based on real life with a kind of imaginary world of stylized characters.

The author took charge of the space of Kaple Gallery in a unique way and realized an installation of paintings that fit directly into the environment of the Kaple Gallery. The exhibition will feature works that have never been exhibited before, as well as paintings that carry the spirit of the chapel.

Tadeáš Kotrba graduated from the High School of Applied Arts in Uherské Hradiště and then in 2012 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studio Grafika I, J. Lindovský; studio of guest teacher J. Merta; studio Painting III, M. Rittstein. In 2011, he completed an internship at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, in Valašské Meziříčí he was a finalist for the Rudolf Schlattauer Award in 2016, he exhibits at home and abroad.
