Two Hong Kong artists have just swapped Hong Kong for Prague for a while. Jive Lau and Mari Liew arrived in the Czech capital for an artist residency, and they’re creating new work during their stay here. And since we at Chemistry Prints love it when things happen naturally and without unnecessary detours, we decided to showcase it right away.

The exhibition “Hong Kong Express” will thus present works created directly during their Prague residency, as well as works by two Czech artists with whom they have a long-standing relationship and collaboration—Michal Škapa and Jan Slanina.

 

Jive Lau, founder of the Hong Kong-based neon studio Kowloneon, is bringing his signature neon installations. Mari Liew will present original drawings that naturally reflect inspiration drawn from her stay in Prague. Both artists are thus showcasing primarily what is being created right now—directly during their residency in Prague.

Michal Škapa will present paintings featuring neon elements, which he unveiled this past March in collaboration with The Chemistry Gallery at the international Art Central Hong Kong fair, held during Hong Kong Art Week and Art Basel Hong Kong. Jan Slanina will complement the exhibition with his signature reliefs, which blend a distinctive approach to materials, space, and neon.

 

Hong Kong Express is neither a showcase of two art scenes nor an attempt to systematically connect them. It is rather a snapshot of one specific encounter: four artists who know each other, collaborate, share an interest in a distinctive visual language, and—right now—have a reason to be together in one gallery.

 

New works by Hong Kong artists from the Prague residency. Works by Czech artists who have already spent time in Hong Kong. Neon, drawings, paintings, and reliefs.
