Daily Routine

13. 3. 2025 - 18. 5. 2025

Kryštof Netolický (*1985) was born in Brno, where he also lives and works. A pictorial narration of sketches of everyday life. One could grasp - and understand - the work of Kryštof Netolický with such ease, which, however, deals with rather serious matters. A person who started profiling his work in the most frequented exhibition spaces - right on the street. The walls and spaces of Brno's nooks and crannies became Netolický's first canvases when he devoted himself to graffiti. In an attempt to distract passers-by from the stereotype, his scope expanded into the form of murals. Years later, he definitively abandons graffiti and concentrates his narratives within the confines of the canvas. These also represent a clearly defined space, while allowing each to adulterate for an arbitrarily long period, which is not corrected by the police patrol, but already by the artist himself. Paradoxically, Netolický thus liberates himself, precisely in the formal medium of painting, as opposed to art made in the public spaces of the streets.

Although Netolický represents a non-academic creative path, visual art has strongly shaped him since childhood - especially through his bravura draughtsman grandfather, Otakar Zemina (1899-1990). The stories of the street, isolated communities, and isolated dark places are told - again beyond expectation, almost paradoxically - in vibrant colors and rendered in almost dreamlike moments.

Netolický's narration of everyday routine mixes humor and exaggeration, but of course also social criticism. Netolický not only records, documents, and archives, but also presents a portfolio of many moments that are often socially obscured or that the ordinary passerby tries to displace.

But Netolický does not create an archive of events; he specifies popular realism. He tells stories that can be experienced regardless of the specific destination. He articulates universal sketches as a provincial American and a Prague resident could experience them.
